The Setup: Accidental Adventure Planning
In April, I embarked on a three-week journey through Southeast Asia. The plan was to start in Laos, however, whilst scouring for flights, I stumbled upon a sweet deal – fly to Singapore with one airline and hop over to Vientiane with another. The catch? I’d get a full day in Singapore. Challenge accepted! After all, who wouldn’t want to squeeze in a micro-adventure in one of Asia’s most iconic cities? With a Saturday night arrival and an early Monday departure, I had one full day to conquer Singapore.
Where I Stayed: YOTEL Singapore
I stayed at YOTEL Singapore on Orchard Road. Compact yet cozy. The restaurant was nice, and the pool was a slice of bliss. Also, the sunrise view from my window? Worth every early morning grumble.
Thanks to the time difference, I was up at 5 am. While that might sound like a nightmare to some, it had its perks – I had a leisurely morning shower, admired the sunrise from my hotel window, and was starting my day before the crowds had hit the streets.
FIRST STOP: Merlion Park
Now, living in Sydney, I’m no stranger to hot days, but Singapore’s 35˚C and 90% humidity laughed in the face of any weather resilience I thought I had. It was 9 am, and I was already sweating like crazy. My first stop was Merlion Park. A bubble tea saved the day as I sipped it in the shade, staring at Marina Bay Sands with equal parts awe and heat-induced delirium.
Tip number one: hydrate like your life depends on it
SECOND STOP: Helix Bridge – The Long Walk to Regret
Feeling ambitious, I decided to walk over the Helix Bridge to Gardens by the Bay. In retrospect, I should’ve rented or found an Anywheel bike because halfway through, I was seriously questioning my life choices. But hey, the city’s futuristic vibes distracted me from my slowly melting state.
THIRD STOP: Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay was a refreshing oasis in the midst of the city’s tropical onslaught. I found myself mentally (and physically) thanking the genius who invented air-conditioning. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest were like nature’s cool-down zones – perfect for anyone battling the heat. The Supertree Observatory and OCBC Skywalk did require a brief return to the outdoors, but the views were absolutely worth it. If you’re crunched for time, these four attractions only took just over 2 hours to explore at a leisurely pace
FOURTH STOP: Back to the hotel – A Painful Realisation
Just when I thought I had things under control, my feet started screaming in protest. That’s when it hit me – I’d accidentally packed my sister’s shoes, which were a size too small. Every step felt like a new form of torture. Let’s just say it was a solid excuse to head back to the hotel for a much-needed break. There, I indulged in a meal, a swim, and a shower before heading out for round two.
Tip number two: always double-check your shoes before packing. Your feet will thank you.
FIFTH STOP: Marina Bay Sands, Chinatown & Artscience Museum: A Cultural Detour
Before heading back to the hotel, I made a quick stop at Marina Bay Sands Shopping Mall. This place was a cool refuge from the scorching heat, conveniently located near the metro. The mall itself was a sight to see: it features a futuristic design with high ceilings and a canal offering gondola rides running through the middle.
With my feet temporarily appeased, I ventured out to Chinatown. The area was a feast for the senses – vibrant colors, tantalizing smells, and a lively atmosphere that made every turn an adventure. After soaking up the culture, I made my way to the artscience museum. However, I quickly discovered that one of the more popular exhibits was booked out. Even though I missed out on the exhibit I was hoping to see, what I did see was still worth it.
Tip number three: Book in advance. Popular attractions like the science museum can fill up quickly, especially the must-see exhibits. Don’t leave it to chance—book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. A little planning goes a long way in making sure you get the most out of your stopover.

SIXTH STOP: LIGHT SHOWS
As the sun set, Singapore transformed into a magical city of lights. I caught the 8 pm light show outside Marina Bay Sands, followed by the 8:45 pm “Garden Rhapsody” light show at Gardens by the Bay. The combination of music and lights was absolutely mesmerizing, a perfect way to wrap up the day. Watching the Supertrees come alive was a surreal experience – one of those ‘pinch-me’ travel moments. By the end of the day, my step counter proudly displayed 33,000 steps, and my feet were ready to go on strike.
Wish List for Next Time: The Must-See Spots I Missed
If I’d had more time, I would’ve hit up Universal Studios or visited Sentosa Island. Booking in advance for the science museum would’ve been smart, too. But despite the whirlwind pace, I got a great taste of Singapore. It was a lot to fit in a day, but in the interest of saving time, I thought it was well worth it. I’m already dreaming of a future stopover to check off the things I missed.
Final Thoughts
For a one-day stopover, Singapore delivered in every way. It was intense, it was sweaty, but it was also incredible. Whilst I think a day was enough to explore the main attractions, Singapore is the kind of place that leaves you wanting more – and I, for one, can’t wait to go back.
